Strong presence of Alliances at EAIE 2025

GO-Creating the Transformation of Higher Education

  • Over 35 alliances, representing more than 300 higher education institutions, will gather in Gothenburg for the 2025 EAIE Conference, held from 9-12 September.
  • More than 20 sessions and a special FOREU4ALL event will highlight the European Universities Initiative’s impact on the future of higher education.

How is higher education transforming Europe and fostering new pathways for global collaboration?  This question will be central at the 35th Annual Conference and Exhibition of the European Association of International Education (EAIE), taking place in Gothenburg from 9 to 12 September, 2025. A record of 35 European Universities alliances, nearly double the participation from 2024, will come together at this major international conference. Together, they represent over 300 higher education institutions and showcase the evolution and impact of the European Universities Initiative, a flagship programme of the European Commission launched in 2019, now encompassing a total of 65 alliances and 8 Seal of Excellence alliances.

This year’s EAIE Conference’s theme, Go-Create, resonates deeply with the mission of alliances. Through more than 20 sessions, as well as a dedicated FOREU4ALL event, they will highlight their commitment to innovation and their pioneering work in shaping inclusive and collaborative higher education models across Europe.

European Universities Alliances & FOREU4ALL: Creating Value for the Wider Higher Education Sector

As part of the programme, FOREU4ALL – the Community of Practice bringing together all European Universities alliances – will host a special joint session with the European Commission on Wednesday, 10 September, from 13:30 to 14:30. This session, aimed at institutions not currently involved in the initiative, will explore how the community’s collective knowledge and tools can benefit the broader higher education sector.

The session will feature an interactive World Café format, inviting participants to discuss practical opportunities around micro-credentials, joint degrees, skills development, and new partnership models.

If you are interested in more EUI-related interactive sessions, panels and activities, you can find an overview of all activities involving ENHANCE here.

Exploring Integration Across Boundaries

ETH Zurich Hosts First ENHANCE Summer School

From 18–22 August 2025, ETH Zurich welcomed 24 students from ENHANCE universities to the first-ever ENHANCE Summer School at this member university. Focused on Inter- and Transdisciplinary Integration in Science, Policy and Practice, the programme was organised by ETH’s Department of Environmental Systems Science and Eawag, under the lead of PD Dr. Bianca Vienni-Baptista and Dr. Sabine Hoffmann.

The summer school addressed one of today’s central challenges: how to integrate knowledge across academic disciplines and between science, policy and practice. Participants explored theories and methods of integration, applied tools such as Theory of Change and Problem Framing, and worked on real-world case studies.

Highlights included insights from the Horizon Europe project DIAMOND on integrated assessment models for net-zero pathways and Eawag’s WINGS programme on resource-oriented sanitation systems. Learning extended beyond the classroom, with interactive workshops, group work, and excursions to the WaterHub@NEST and the Hunziker Areal living lab. These hands-on experiences encouraged reflection not only on technical aspects of integration, but also on personal qualities such as flexibility, humility, and openness.

The week concluded with reflections from participants, who emphasised that integration is as much about building trust and relationships as about frameworks and methods. As one student put it, “Collaboration works best when we listen to each other with openness and curiosity.” The summer school showed the value of spaces where young researchers can experiment, collaborate, and co-create knowledge.

About the ENHANCE Innovative Learning Campus

This summer school was part of the ENHANCE Innovative Learning Campus, which promotes interdisciplinary learning and professional development across the ENHANCE network through short-term innovative learning experiences. The ENHANCE ILC offers a diverse range of opportunities – including micro-credential programmes, MOOCs, summer and winter schools, hackathons, and workshops – focused on addressing key global challenges such as sustainability and societal impact. Participants benefit from a flexible, collaborative learning environment that supports both personal growth and career advancement, with opportunities for physical or virtual exchanges.

We thank ETH Zurich and Eawag for their support, the lecturers for their inspiring contributions, and above all the students, whose outstanding engagement made this week a truly enriching experience.

ENHANCE Future Lab 2025

Young people’s visions of the future

International Perspectives on the Future of Education and Learning in the Digital Transformation

What do future generations dream of? How do young people envision education, learning and the university of the future – especially in the context of digital transformation and the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI)? What opportunities and risks do they foresee in this evolving landscape?

The ENHANCE Future Lab, taking place at Technische Universität Berlin from 15 to 19 September 2025, will explore these questions. Twenty young people aged 14 to 17 from ten European cities – home to ENHANCE partner universities – have been invited: Berlin, Warsaw, Valencia, Milan, Trondheim, Aachen, Gothenburg, Gdańsk, Zurich, and Delft.

During a one-week participatory, interactive, and creative workshop, participants will develop and share their visions for the future of learning and higher education in the context of digital transformation and the rise of AI. The workshop will focus on exploring both the opportunities and the challenges that digitalization and AI present for the education sector.

The aim of the Future Lab is to explore young people’s perspectives of and make them visible, with the goal incorporating them into university development processes – both in teaching and in the organisational evolution of universities. In addition, the outcomes are intended to inspire further academic research.

Building on its successful debut in 2023, the ENHANCE Future Lab 2025 positions itself as a blueprint for the co-creative involvement of future generations in processes of social and institutional transformation.

Academic Leadership and Coordination:

Prof. Dr. Susann Fegter and Dr. Karen Geipel, Institute of Educational Science, Technical University of Berlin.

Launch of the ENHANCE Onboarding Toolkit & Video

Your Guide to the ENHANCE Guided Education Paths

The ENHANCE Alliance is proud to announce the release of the Onboarding Toolkit and a brand-new explainer video for the ENHANCE Guided Education Paths – two key resources to support the co-creation and implementation of international, interdisciplinary study journeys across the ENHANCE Alliance.

What Are the ENHANCE Guided Education Paths?

The ENHANCE Guided Education Paths are carefully curated, multi-institutional study tracks within ENHANCE that allow students to specialise in their field of interest while studying across Europe’s leading technical universities. Each path consists of pre-recognised, credit-guaranteed courses from at least two ENHANCE institutions, often supplemented by short-term formats such as summer schools, Blended Intensive Programmes, or thesis projects abroad.

These paths are not just mobility programmes – they’re excellence-driven academic journeys for bright, motivated students who seek to:

  • Deepen their expertise in a thematic field
  • Learn from diverse academic cultures
  • Gain international credentials and cross-cultural experience
  • Join a European learning community

Currently running paths are available in areas such as Energy, Urban Sustainability, and Digital Transformation, with several new tracks in development to be launched in the coming months. All currently pre-approved and recognised courses within active Guided Education Paths are now available via the ENHANCE Courses Catalogue. Students can explore options, and coordinators can browse offerings from across the Alliance to plan upcoming study paths.

New ENHANCE GEP Video out now!

Our new explainer video introduces the concept of Guided Education Paths, how they work, and what makes them unique for both students and staff.

A heartfelt thank you to our ENHANCE colleagues and the dedicated students from Warsaw University of Technology, whose collaboration made this video possible!

Are you an academic at an ENHANCE member university? Join our paths!

To help academics and study programme coordinators across the Alliance bring these paths to life, ENHANCE has developed an Onboarding Toolkit. The toolkit offers:

  • Implementation scenarios (internationalisation, specialisation, transdisciplinarity)
  • Practical guidance for course recognition and mobility setup
  • Matchmaking procedures and best practices
  • Resources for inclusive, high-quality delivery
  • Timeline and workload estimates for teaching staff
  • Contact details of local ENHANCE staff that will support you in your experience of co-creating innovative learning for our European learners.

What’s Next?

ENHANCE is actively developing new Guided Education Paths in collaboration with academics from all partner universities. These new tracks will open for applications in the coming months, further expanding the opportunities for transnational, excellence-based study journeys. Whether you’re a professor ready to co-create a new track, or a student eager to join one — now is the perfect time to get involved.

Driving Forward One Campus Vision

ENHANCE Steering Committee Meets in Zurich

From June 18 to 20, 2025, the ENHANCE Steering Committee and Core Officers convened in Zurich for their annual in-person meeting. The two-day gathering was a key moment for the Alliance to take stock of progress and shape the next steps in delivering the ENHANCE+ project and advancing the ENHANCE One Campus vision.

At the heart of the discussions was a shared commitment to impact — not only for our university communities, but also for the broader landscape of European higher education. The meeting reaffirmed the Alliance’s collective ambition to fulfil the often-cited “transformative potential” of European University Alliances.

One of the major topics was the first evaluation of the ENHANCE Innovative Learning Campus, which provided valuable insights into how learners engage with ENHANCE offers and highlighted opportunities for further improvement. Challenges such as optimising monitoring processes and scaling up mobility were discussed, with members sharing best practices from across the Alliance. In parallel, the Steering Committee explored the development of joint education pathways. Building on four pilot programmes, the ENHANCE Guided Education Paths are being expanded through close collaboration between professors and programme coordinators at partner institutions. These structured yet flexible paths will enable students to study at multiple ENHANCE universities, deepening the integrative approach of the One Campus concept

ENHANCE SteerCo members and Core operational staff in Zurich, June 2025.
Setting the sails for European collaboration: Members of the ENHANCE Operational Core during this year’s Steering Committee meeting, hosted by our member ETH Zürich.

A key milestone from the meeting was an agreement on the IT infrastructure roadmap to support the further development of the ENHANCE Innovative Learning Campus platform. This decision lays the foundation for a user-centric, scalable digital environment that empowers students and educators to fully participate in the ENHANCE community.

Beyond strategic discussions, the in-person format allowed members to strengthen relationships across the Alliance — whether over lunch, during a scenic boat trip, or in friendly competition at the ENHANCE pub quiz. These informal moments remain essential in fostering the spirit of collaboration that drives ENHANCE forward.

The Steering Committee plays a central role in ENHANCE governance, guiding strategic decision-making and ensuring alignment across the Alliance’s activities — learn more about ENHANCE governance here. With strong momentum and a renewed sense of unity, the ENHANCE Steering Committee and Core Officers leave Zurich focused on the future: building a truly integrated, impactful, and learner-driven European University Alliance.

The ENHANCE Alliance extends its sincere thanks to our colleagues at ETH Zürich for their warm hospitality and outstanding organisation of the meeting. From the welcoming venue to the thoughtfully arranged agenda and social activities, ETH Zürich created an ideal environment for strategic exchange, reflection, and forward-looking dialogue. Their support played a vital role in the success of the gathering and the strong sense of unity it fostered among participants.

Strasbourg, May 2025 – From May 26–28, five students from the ENHANCE Alliance joined over 230 peers from more than 50 European University Alliances at the European Student Assembly (ESA 2025), held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Over three days, students came together to discuss, draft, and vote on policy recommendations aimed at addressing some of Europe’s most pressing societal challenges.

Representing ENHANCE were:

  • Dennis Matoshi Bekkelund – NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology)
  • Veronique Sahni – TU Delft
  • Vivienne Hahnke – ETH Zurich
  • Domitille Grand Jean – RWTH Aachen
  • Alfonso Maria Senatore – Politecnico di Milano

This immersive experience in European policymaking is a prime example of how ENHANCE fulfills its mission to expand and multiply student voices on local, regional, and international levels. Through ESA, students not only gain a deeper understanding of European governance and civic engagement, but also take an active role in shaping the continent’s future.

Policy Innovation Meets Democratic Practice

Students were divided into thematic panels where they collaborated over several months in preparation for the Assembly. The final days in Strasbourg involved lively debate, proposal refinement, and formal voting sessions at the Parliament.

ENHANCE student Dennis Matoshi Bekkelund served on Panel 3: AI, European Democracy & Civic Engagement, working closely with coordinators and fellow students to address the question: “How can the EU benefit from Artificial Intelligence in its mission of promoting democracy?”

Dennis co-authored two policy recommendations that were adopted by the Assembly:

  1. Aligning cybersecurity frameworks with GDPR to enable secure cross-border threat intelligence while maintaining privacy and rights protections.
  2. Training and certifying EU citizens to respond to AI-driven cyber threats, with support from the Digital Europe Programme, and revising gaps in the NIS2 directive.

Reflecting on the experience, Dennis shared:

“Strasbourg was a beautiful backdrop to a powerful experience. I return home with a deeper understanding of digital democracy — and a reminder of how diverse and beautiful the people of Europe truly are.”

A Diverse and Collaborative Community

ENHANCE representatives: Vivienne Hahnke (ETH Zurich) and Veronique Sahni (TU Delft)

ESA 2025 brought together students from across Europe, representing a wide range of disciplines, backgrounds, and cultures. TU Delft student Veronique Sahni highlighted the importance of this diversity:

“It was inspiring to see such a motivated and diverse group of students collaborating, learning from each other, and striving to make a real impact. I truly believe that bringing together so many different perspectives is essential to finding innovative solutions for the future of Europe.”

The event also fostered meaningful friendships and long-term connections, as students engaged in cultural exchange, informal dialogue, and cross-border networking.

Inside the Assembly: Reflections from Our Student Delegates

As part of their experience, two of our delegates shared deeper reflections on the Assembly’s impact — both personally and academically.

Veronique Sahni, studying Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis, and Management at TU Delft, applied her policy knowledge in a real-world setting at ESA:

“Participating in ESA gave me the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned about policy-making in a real European setting. I met students from all over Europe, bringing diverse views into our panel work. We debated everything from mental health to climate displacement, and I found it especially meaningful to work on policies like reducing wealth inequality and increasing parental leave.”

Her panel, Unveiling Inequalities, tackled wide-ranging social issues and proposed inclusive, measurable policies with European-wide implications. “These proposals matter for ENHANCE too, especially around lifelong learning, inclusive innovation, and the role of environmental policy in higher education.”

Dennis Matoshi Bekkelund, a Political Science student at NTNU, emphasized the power of combining high-level policy dialogue with cultural exchange:

“Representing NTNU, ENHANCE, and Norway at ESA25 strengthened my resolve to work with technology, democratic innovation, and policymaking. Discussing AI, ethics, and digital governance with brilliant peers reminded me how diverse and beautiful Europe really is. I now see myself not just as a student of policy—but as a co-creator of it.”

His panel focused on how the EU can harness artificial intelligence to support democracy. Dennis helped draft two proposals, both adopted by a strong majority, covering cross-border cybersecurity coordination and AI literacy training under the Digital Europe Programme.

“This experience proves that students from research-driven universities aren’t just academically prepared—they’re politically relevant. ESA25 empowered us to take ideas from theory into action.”

Looking Ahead: From Assembly to Action

Having contributed to shaping actionable policy recommendations, all five ENHANCE students are now part of the ESA Alumni community. This next phase encourages them to continue advocating for their proposals, engaging with stakeholders, and exploring further opportunities for impact—both within the ENHANCE Alliance and through wider European channels. The ENHANCE Alliance is proud of our student delegates and their dedication to democratic engagement, policy innovation, and European collaboration. Their participation in ESA 2025 exemplifies our commitment to empowering students to become active change-makers in Europe.
