This publication examines how transdisciplinarity (TD) – collaborative research integrating multiple knowledge perspectives and societal engagement – can be institutionalised to support sustainable development in higher education. Focusing on seven technical universities within the ENHANCE Alliance, it combines previously mapped case studies with primary interview data from 25 participants. Findings highlight barriers such as traditional disciplinary structures, cultural clashes, and limited resources, alongside enabling factors including leadership support, engagement with diverse communities, directed funding, recruitment criteria, curricula, and cultures of trust. The study provides empirical evidence and practical insights for universities seeking to embed TD in strategy, research, and education.
